Wood Street Mission
Helping Manchester children and families since 1869.
Wood Street Mission and Will Solicitors
Wood Street Mission has been helping children and families in Manchester since 1869. Its aim is to improve the life chances of children and families living in poverty, and it takes referrals for families in Manchester and Salford. Its projects include Family Basics, Smart Start, Books Forever, Childhood Experiences and a Christmas appeal. In its early years it gave room and board to children with nowhere else to go and took city children on their first seaside holiday. It is based at 26 Wood Street in central Manchester.
We work with Wood Street Mission because gifts in wills have been part of its story for over 150 years. Plaques for early legacies that paid for cots and beds still hang in the building. Your family comes first, so your first consultation call is free, with no obligation. Our fees are fixed and published, from £150 + VAT for a single will or £275 + VAT for a pair of mirror wills, and you know the price before any work starts. If you would like to leave a gift to help local children, we write it in.
Looking after the people behind the charity
Wood Street Mission says gifts in wills have been part of its story for over 150 years. Some early legacies paid for cots and beds, and plaques recording them still hang in the building.
If you support its work with local families, your will can carry that on. A will matters for your own family first. If you have children, it is where you name guardians and decide when they inherit. If you live with a partner but are not married, it is often the only way they will inherit from you. Once those people are protected, any gift you choose can help Manchester and Salford children have what they need.

Questions from Wood Street Mission supporters
Cannot see yours? Ask it on your free consultation call.
What kinds of gift can I leave to Wood Street Mission?
The charity's own legacy guide describes four types. A pecuniary gift is a fixed sum. A residuary gift is a share of what is left. A specific gift is a particular item. A reversionary gift passes to the charity only after another person's interest ends. Your adviser explains which suits you.
I am a parent. What should my will cover?
Most importantly, who would look after your children if you could not. You can name guardians, choose who manages money for your children, and decide the age at which they inherit. Your adviser asks about your family on the consultation call and drafts a will you approve before anything is signed.
Can I leave a gift for a particular project, like the Christmas appeal?
You can express a wish for your gift to support a particular project. Charities usually prefer flexibility, because projects change over time. A common approach is to leave the gift for general purposes and mention the work you care about. Your adviser can word this so it stays useful for years to come.
