What we promise you

Expert guidance, no obligation and tailored advice. This page sets out what each of those means, what happens after you book, and what else you can hold us to.

Here is the promise in full, and what happens after you book.

The promise

Three things. Each of them is something you can check for yourself on the call.

Expert guidance. Speak directly with our legal experts who specialise in will writing. The people you speak to do this work every day, at a firm regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. You get a straight answer in plain words from someone who knows the law and knows what goes wrong.

No obligation. A free consultation to discuss your needs and explore your options. The call costs nothing and commits you to nothing. If you decide not to go ahead, that is the end of it. If you do, you are told the fee before any work starts.

Tailored advice. Personalised recommendations based on your specific circumstances. On the call we go through your family, what you own and what you want to happen, and we tell you what you actually need rather than what we would most like to sell you. If you do not need something, we say so.

We have written it this way because a promise you can test in a conversation is worth more than an adjective on a website.

What happens after you book

Three steps. The third is a conversation with a named member of the team, and once you are happy we create a draft for you to approve.

  1. Pick a time that suits you. Choose a slot in our calendar, including evenings and Saturdays. It takes a minute and there is no form to fill in first.
  2. Get a few things together. We tell you what to have to hand. Usually the full names and addresses of the people you want to appoint and inherit, and a rough idea of what you own. Nothing you need an accountant for.
  3. Your consultation call. You talk it through with a named member of the team. We tell you what you actually need and what it will cost, and once you are happy we create a draft for you to approve.

That is the whole of it. Three things you can hold us to, and a process that ends with a draft for you to approve.

What a draft means, and what it does not

A draft is your documents, written for your circumstances, ready for you to read. It is not a template with your name typed into it and it is not a summary.

A draft is not the finished matter. After the draft comes your reading of it, any changes you want, and then signing and witnessing, and those steps run at your pace rather than ours.

One round of amendments is included in the price. If you want further changes after that, we will tell you what they cost before we make them.

Your will only becomes a valid will when it is signed and witnessed correctly. We will tell you exactly how that has to be done. Until then it is a draft, however good it is.

What we need from you

Some of this depends on you, and the part that does is small.

Send us the information we ask for after the call. Answer any question we come back with, because a single unanswered question about a name or an address can hold up a whole document. And read the draft when it arrives rather than leaving it in an inbox, because the gap between a draft and a signed will is where most of the delay in this work actually happens.

If we are waiting on you, we will say so plainly rather than go quiet.

The rest of what you can hold us to

A fixed fee, agreed first. Wills start from a fixed fee of £150 + VAT for a single will, and from £275 + VAT for a matching pair for a couple. A lasting power of attorney is a fixed fee, confirmed on your consultation call. You are told the price before any work starts. If something about your circumstances falls outside the fixed fee, we tell you at the point you instruct us.

A named person. You speak to a member of the team, and that is the person who deals with your file. Not a call centre and not a queue.

A regulated firm. WillSolicitor.co.uk is a trading style of B J McKenna & Co Solicitors LLP, authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority under number 570089. We carry compulsory professional indemnity insurance, we hold client money under the SRA Accounts Rules, and you can check our registration on the SRA's public register before you instruct us.

Plain English. If we send you something you cannot understand, tell us and we will rewrite it. A will you do not understand is a will you cannot check.

If that is what you are after, this is where it starts.
