Mustard Tree

Combats poverty. Prevents homelessness.

The partnership

Mustard Tree and Will Solicitors

Mustard Tree is a Manchester charity that combats poverty and prevents homelessness. From its base on Oldham Road in Ancoats, it offers food, furniture and clothing to people in crisis, alongside training, work placements, advice and creative classes. Its founder, Dave Smith, named it after the parable of the mustard seed. It began as a Christian charity and now welcomes people of all faiths and none. Its aim is to help people across Greater Manchester improve their finances and find settled homes.

We work with Mustard Tree because many of its supporters give time as well as money, and see what a plan can do. A will is your plan for the people you choose. Your first consultation call costs nothing and comes with no obligation. Our fees are fixed and published, from £150 + VAT for a single will or £275 + VAT for a pair of mirror wills, and you know the price before any work starts. If you would like your support for people in Greater Manchester to continue, we write a gift to Mustard Tree into your will.

Why it matters

Looking after the people behind the charity

People who support Mustard Tree often give time as well as money, sorting donated furniture or helping at food clubs. They see first hand how quickly life can unravel without a plan.

A will is your own plan. It makes sure your savings, home and belongings go to the people you choose, and that someone you trust deals with your affairs. A lasting power of attorney does the same while you are alive, if illness stops you managing things. If you want your support for people in Greater Manchester to continue, a gift in your will is one way to do it, and we can write it in clearly.

Mustard Tree does not have a legacy page. Can I still leave it a gift?

Yes. Any registered charity can receive a gift in your will. We use Mustard Tree's full name and registered charity number, 1135192, so the gift reaches the right organisation. If you would like to tell the charity about your plans, you can contact its team directly, but you do not have to.

I volunteer rather than donate. Is a gift in my will right for me?

Only if it feels right. There is no expectation. Some volunteers like the idea of a gift continuing their support after they are gone, while others prefer to focus on family. Your adviser talks through your options without pressure and writes in only what you decide.

Can I leave items like furniture to a charity in my will?

You can leave specific items to anyone, including a charity. In practice it is often simpler to leave money or a share of your estate, because your executors do not then have to arrange collection or valuation. Your adviser explains the choices so your wishes are easy to carry out.
