Lifeshare

Manchester's oldest homelessness charity, since 1984.

The partnership

Lifeshare and Will Solicitors

Lifeshare is a Manchester charity, registered number 1042500, that began in 1984 when a group of volunteers saw that rough sleepers in the city had little support. It describes itself as Manchester's oldest charity dedicated to people facing homelessness and poverty. Today it works across Manchester and Salford, running Weekend Breakfast with food, showers, clothing, barbering, podiatry and advice, a weekly food bank and a Christmas Respite Hub. Over the years it helped set up the Booth Centre and the Big Issue Up North.

Lifeshare has kept going for over forty years because people like you keep giving. A will does the same for your own family, making your wishes clear at a hard time. As a Lifeshare supporter, your first consultation call is free and you are not committed to anything. Our fees are fixed and published, from £150 + VAT for a single will or £275 + VAT for a pair of mirror wills, and you know the price before any work starts. If you want to leave a gift to Lifeshare, we write it into your will for you.

Why it matters

Looking after the people behind the charity

Lifeshare has relied on volunteers and donors for more than forty years, through every change in the city. Supporters who have given food, time or money often want that care to continue after they are gone.

A gift in your will is one way to do that, and it can be any size. Just as important, a will protects the people closest to you, makes your wishes clear and saves your family stress at a hard time. If you have never made one, or yours was written many years ago, now is a good moment to put that right.

Your questions

Questions from Lifeshare supporters

Cannot see yours? Ask it on your free consultation call.

How do I include Lifeshare in my will?

Tell your adviser on the consultation call. You can leave Lifeshare a fixed sum, a share of your estate, or whatever remains after family and friends are provided for. We will use the charity's registered name and number, 1042500, so the gift reaches the right organisation without delay. You approve the draft before anything is signed.

My will is over ten years old. Do I need a new one?

It is worth checking. Marriage usually cancels an earlier will, and divorce, new grandchildren, a house move or the death of an executor can all leave an old will out of step with your wishes. Your adviser can look at your current will on the call and tell you whether a new one is needed.

Can I leave money for a particular project, like Weekend Breakfast?

You can express a wish, but charities' projects change over time, so a gift tied too tightly to one service can cause difficulties. A common approach is to leave the gift for Lifeshare's general purposes and add a note of your wishes. Your adviser can suggest wording that respects your intentions while giving the charity flexibility.

Does a gift to charity affect inheritance tax?

Gifts to UK registered charities are generally free of inheritance tax, and leaving a larger share to charity can in some cases reduce the rate on the rest of your estate. The rules depend on your circumstances. If inheritance tax is a concern, your adviser can explain how it applies to you as part of protecting your estate.
