The partnership

Colony and Will Solicitors

Colony is a Manchester flexible workspace and coworking operator, founded in 2017. It runs a network of sites across the city centre, including King Street, Spring Gardens, One Silk Street, Flint Glass Works, Fabrica, Jactin House in Ancoats, Piccadilly and The Astley. Its members range from creatives, freelancers and start-ups to established companies, using private offices for teams of 2 to 100, coworking desks, meeting rooms, event space, a podcast studio and Creator Studios.

Many Colony members work for themselves or have built a business from scratch, often without death in service cover in the background. A will decides where your shares go, and a lasting power of attorney keeps the bills paid if you cannot. As a Colony member, your first consultation call with us is free and there is no obligation. Our fees are fixed and published, from £150 + VAT for a single will or £275 + VAT for a pair of mirror wills, and you know the price before any work starts.

Why it matters

Looking after the people behind the firm

Colony is full of people who work for themselves or have built something from scratch. Freelancers, founders and small teams may not have an employer pension scheme or death in service cover quietly in the background, so their own plans carry more weight.

If you own shares in a start-up, your will decides where they go. If you are the person who signs off invoices and pays the bills, a lasting power of attorney means someone you trust can keep things running if you are suddenly unable to. A business is only as secure as the arrangements behind its owner.

Your questions

Questions from Colony members

Cannot see yours? Ask it on your free consultation call.

I am a freelancer at Colony. Do I really need a will?

If anyone depends on you, or you own anything you care about, a will is worth having. Without one, the intestacy rules decide who inherits, and an unmarried partner receives nothing automatically. A single will starts from £150 plus VAT, and your first consultation call is free with no obligation.

I co-founded a company. What happens to my shares?

Your shares pass under your will, subject to the company's articles and any shareholder agreement. Some agreements give co-founders the right to buy them. It is worth checking that those documents and your will fit together. We can talk this through on your consultation call and explain your options plainly.

Can an LPA cover my business finances?

A property and financial affairs LPA covers your personal finances, which for a sole trader includes the business. If you run a limited company, the company's own rules decide who can act for it, so you may also need separate arrangements. We can explain the difference on a free consultation call.
