The partnership

Brake and Will Solicitors

Brake is the UK's road safety charity, working towards a world where no one is killed or hurt on a road. For more than 30 years it has campaigned for safer roads, including progressive licensing for new drivers, zero tolerance on drink-driving and default 20mph limits. It also runs Road Safety Week each year. Brake offers a free specialist helpline for anyone bereaved or injured in a road crash, with information, guidance and support with legal processes.

We work with Brake because its supporters understand why planning ahead matters. Alongside a will, a lasting power of attorney lets someone deal with your bank and bills if an injury means you cannot. Your first consultation call is free and carries no obligation. Our fees are fixed and published, from £150 + VAT for a single will or £275 + VAT for a pair of mirror wills, and you know the price before any work starts. If you would like to help Brake support road crash victims in the future, we write the gift into your will for you.

Why it matters

Looking after the people behind the charity

Brake's supporters know better than most how suddenly a road crash can change a family. Many have been through it themselves.

That makes planning ahead feel less abstract. A will makes sure the people you love are provided for and that someone you trust is in charge, without a long wait while the law decides. A lasting power of attorney matters too. After a serious injury, someone may need to deal with your bank, your bills or your care while you recover. Without an LPA, your family may have to apply to the court first. A gift to Brake can also help fund its helpline for families facing the same shock.

Your questions

Questions from Brake supporters

Cannot see yours? Ask it on your free consultation call.

What happens if I am seriously injured and cannot manage my affairs?

If you have a lasting power of attorney, the people you chose can step in straight away once it is registered. Without one, your family may need to apply to the Court of Protection, which takes time and adds cost. That is why many Brake supporters put LPAs in place alongside their wills.

How do I leave a gift to Brake in my will?

Tell your adviser on the consultation call. Brake publishes sample wording for different types of gift, and we use the charity's full name and registered charity number, 1093244, so it is paid correctly. You can leave a fixed sum, a specific item, or a share of your estate.

I lost someone in a road crash and never sorted out a will. Where do I start?

With a conversation. Your adviser understands that this can be hard and will go at your pace. If you also need help with the estate of the person who died, we can talk about that on the same call. There is no cost for the first consultation and no obligation.
