The partnership

Bluesci and Will Solicitors

Bluesci Support is a community interest company working across Trafford to support mental health and wellbeing. It runs wellbeing centres at Broomwood in Timperley, Old Trafford, Coppice and Partington. People can drop in or be referred for social prescribing, talking therapies, peer support groups, arts and music, and help to stop smoking. Its Bluesci at Night service gives people in emotional distress an alternative to accident and emergency, with telephone support every evening of the year. Bluesci works alongside Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust and Trafford Libraries.

Bluesci helps people across Trafford look after their mental health, and planning ahead is part of looking after yourself. A will and a lasting power of attorney keep your choices in the hands of people you trust. If you are part of the Bluesci community, your first consultation call is free and you are under no obligation. Our fees are fixed and published, from £150 + VAT for a single will or £275 + VAT for a pair of mirror wills, and you know the price before any work starts.

Why it matters

Looking after the people behind the charity

People who work in mental health know that capacity can change, sometimes suddenly, and that planning ahead protects people's choices.

The same is true for you. A lasting power of attorney lets you choose who would manage your money or speak up about your care if you could not. A will makes sure the people you love, not a set of default rules, inherit what you leave. For Bluesci staff and volunteers who spend their days helping others, these documents are a practical way to look after yourself and the people closest to you.

Your questions

What is the difference between a will and a lasting power of attorney?

A will only takes effect when you die. It says who inherits and who deals with your estate. A lasting power of attorney works while you are alive, if you lose the ability to make certain decisions. It lets someone you trust handle your money, your health and care, or both. Most adults benefit from having both in place.

I work for Bluesci. Can I talk to someone without committing to anything?

Yes. The first consultation call is free and there is no obligation to go further. You talk it through with a named adviser, who will explain the options and the fixed fee for your situation. If you decide to go ahead, you approve a draft before anything is signed.

Should I make an LPA if I am young and healthy?

An LPA can only be made while you have capacity, so it has to be done before it is needed. Accidents and sudden illness can happen at any age. Without one, your family may need to apply to the Court of Protection to manage your affairs, which is slower and more costly. Many people make LPAs alongside their will.

Can my attorney make decisions about my mental health care?

A health and welfare LPA can let your attorney make decisions about your care and treatment if you cannot make them yourself. You can include preferences and instructions to guide them. It only applies when you lack capacity for that decision. Your adviser can explain how it fits with any other plans you have in place.
